Brenna Gomez, Colorado College Public Interest Fellow

Posted by SpringsBusiness.com On June - 30 - 2009

brenna gomez colorado college 300x294 Brenna Gomez, Colorado College Public Interest Fellow1 – What was your major/minor at CC and where are you from?
I was an English: Creative Writing major and a Feminist and Gender Studies Minor. I graduated cum laude and with Distinction in English: Creative Writing.
2 – What did you like most about the block plan?
I loved the ability to focus on things that you love in unexpected ways. There is nothing like studying Michelangelo in Italy with an amazing group of people. Standing in front of the art, or having the school rent out the Vatican for two hours so our class could be alone in the Sistine Chapel, was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. When you see what the colors look like in real life instead of on a slide, it opens up new doors of learning. Being able to leave campus for a month to do that… well, you just can’t do that anywhere else.
3 – What is a Colorado College Public Interest Fellow and what is your role at the Women’s Resource Agency this summer?

CC created the PIFP program approximately 7-8 years ago. This past application season was the most competitive one they have had yet. The school does the first screening of applicants and then sends 3-4 very qualified finalists to the agencies for interviews. Each agency is a non-profit either in Denver or Colorado Springs. Some of the programs last 12 weeks, others are 12 months. The PIFP fellows are meant to learn what the non-profit sector is like and help to begin meaningful, systemic change. Here is the link to the PIFP webpage in case you would like more detailed information: www.coloradocollege.edu/PublicInterest At the Women’s Resource Agency I am focusing on advancing the public policy and advocacy agendas, while also advancing our community relations.
